Michael Waterfield, MD, PhD

Jun Hyung Sin 

BMS Graduate Student 

Jun received his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology. He then worked at a pharmaceutical company before joining UCSF as a Staff Research Associate. In 2021, he started graduate school in the Biomedical Sciences Program at UCSF in the Waterfield Lab. His research interests include looking at the epigenetics of mTEC and T cell development. In his free time, Jun enjoys playing tennis, exploring new restaurants, and traveling.

Sloan Phillips 

Staff Research Associate

Sloan graduated from Bates College in 2025 with a Bachelor's of Science in Biochemistry and Human Rights and Social Justice. They are interested in understanding how different transcription factors effect the development of the thymus and consequently effect central tolerance. Outside of lab, you can find them running, playing frisbee, and doing sewing projects!

Ethan Greenberg 

High School Intern 

Ethan Greenberg is currently a Senior at San Francisco University High School. Diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis when he was 10, Ethan became curious about why the immune system turns against its own tissues. In his free time, you can find Ethan running, cooking, or playing jazz on the trombone and piano!

Lab Snowman 

Morale Booster 

Lab snowman is a crucial member of the lab. They just finished up their degree in clogging up the freezers. Their primary interest in lab is morale. Outside of our lab, you can find them melting on our collaborators’ desks.

Guardian Angel  

After earning a degree from the local pool in floating, she decided to join our lab to pursue her passion for science.  She sits at the door with a watchful eye, spying on those who walk past. In her free time, she likes to play in the lab snow with lab snowman.
